I talked about the 'draw command' a bit in the magic section, but thought I'd try to make it a little more clearer here since I breifly touched upon it before. Well, here goes...

The magic system is totaly different from any of the past final fantasy games. In the past, your characters would learn magic as they gained levels. Then with Final Fantasy VI, you learned magic from espers when they were equiped. With Final Fantasy VII, materia was introduced and for your characters to use magic, the materia had to be on your character all the time, othewise they would loose the type of magic the materia had. Now, in Final Fantasy VIII, magic is obtained by use of the 'Draw' command. When you use this command, you absorb a magical power from the ememy you use it on. Different enemies give you different spells. If you succeed when doing this, you will have two options on your hands. You can either use the spell instantly as a fast effect, or store it for later use. The longer you store a spell, the more powerfull it will become. To pump up more powerfull spells, you have to store them for much greater lengths of time. So the disadvantage about using a spell right away is that it won't be as strong as if you had stored it for a while. Also, if you store a spell for a long enough time, you will be able to store it in a library and your character will have permanently learned the spell. The bad thing about this command is that it can get very frustrating when trying to absorb magic from a powerfull enemy.

Well it's true that the stronger the enemy, the stronger the magic spell is that you can absorb from them. But at the same time, the stronger the enemy, the less likely the 'draw' command will be successful on them. In some extreme casses, you may have to use an item, or even a Guardian Force to 'draw' the magic from them. Another thing that's interesting with Final Fantasy VIII, is that there's no tresure chests in the game. Fron Final Fantasy I to VII, there have been treasure chests.

But now, treasure chests no longer exist. Don't worry, they haven't just been phased out. Well, actually they have, but they have been replaced with something called 'Draw Points.' These points are found in coloured(canadian spelling) orbs. They can be used to boost the stats of your characters. Stats like Max HP, Attack Power, Defense, etc. These points are totaly random though. Nothing you do will effect the amount of points you will be able to obtain at a single time.
